Reflective Practice - A Tool for Self Improvement

This article examines the importance of reflective practice as a tool for self-assessment of schools - to improve by the relevance and importance of reflective practice cycle.

The article is structured under the following headings:
- Reflecting on
- The importance of reflective practice
- What is reflective practice cycle?

- What are the effects of the RP for a school?
- CONCLUSION

On reflecting ...

Have you ever been, withreturned from a date with someone new, sat down and dissected the events of the evening to the smallest detail? Perhaps you have asked if you have a comment from may have had an unintended meaning, or perhaps misunderstood.

Have you ever worried that you misunderstood your dates body language, or - especially if the date is wrong, thought about what went wrong and how to prevent the same mistake next time?

This is perhaps an overly negative picture of a possibly beautifulEvening, but it does serve to the fact that we all take in our daily life, your time to think about and reflect on things that have happened during our time highlight.

Whether this is done consciously or unconsciously, we react all the circumstances, by thinking about it and the processing of events through memory and memory. And more often than not, create one thought decisions and these decisions create opportunities to determine future action.

So we can back from vacation, armedwith photos and stories, while reflecting and may decide there again next year, or maybe because things went wrong, opt for a better travel agent or other destination.

Or perhaps, as a parent returning from a tour of a few interested schools for your child, you must go down to open the possibilities SA you remember every school visited and remember the impact could have any. They weigh the pros and cons of each, consider each scenario from a rangePerspectives, and finally make a decision that is not overthrown.

Think of times recent and past where you stopped to reflect and think about an experience to have. "Think" here and "Remembrance" are not synonymous: if you think we remember events and details, and if we "think" they put our critical thinking faculties, with analysis and evaluation, synthesis and argument. We ask questions and try to find answers, we design and build capabilities, weto assess process, to deconstruct and the results of the ideas and strategies. From this we can decisions to be made and to articulate possible ways of implementing those decisions.

So see, in an attempt to a reasonable definition of the process of reflection, let this simple formula:

REMINDER and think about making decisions and planning + = REFLECTING

We all, in any form, think about our experiences. Reflective practice is a means ofEvidence of such thinking and reasoning. It is a record of the ways that you are thinking about and have reflected on an experience.

THE IMPORTANCE OF reflective practice

I would like to claim that the school improvements would be lower if all schools adopted reflective practice to make a daily habit.

I am not alone in my thinking:

"Critical reflection on experience will be an effective technique for the continued professional development." Kettle & B.Sellars, N. (1996). The development of student teachers practical theory of teaching. Teaching and Teacher Education, 12 (1), 1-24. EJ 526 790

"With its nature, causes the reflective practice cycle teachers to step back and critically reflect not only how they teach but also why they teach in a certain way." Schön, DA (1996). Educating the reflective practitioner: Against a new design for teaching and learning in the professions. San Francisco: Jossey

"Next year is my finalYear and I feel moreonfident and motivated in my studies since the end of this module and have learned a lot about me and my learning style, by maintaining the journal, and I'm going to start, you can permanently so my reflective learning process can be improved. I now know the skills that graduates will be looking for employers and I have to have to get a good job -. My action plan will help me to do it "Student, Napier University

"The primary benefit of reflective practice forTeachers is a deeper understanding of their own teaching style and ultimately more effective than teachers. Other specific benefits noted in the literature include the validation of a teacher's ideals, economic challenges to tradition, the recognition of teaching as art and respect for diversity in the application of theory to classroom practice. . Freidus, H. (1997) The telling of history: The teachers know what they know Educational Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American.Research Association (AERA), Chicago, IL. ED 409 274

"The ability to see beyond that, do what you think and why - assessing past actions, current situations and intended outcomes - is critical to intelligent practice, practice that is reflective rather than routine." Journal article by Hilda Borko, Paul Michalec, Jean Siddle, Maria Timm, Journal of Teacher Education, Vol 48, 1997

"The primary benefit of reflective practice for teachers is a deeper understanding of their own teaching styleand ultimately increase your effectiveness as a teacher. Other specific benefits noted in the literature include the validation of a teacher's ideals, economic challenges to tradition, the recognition of teaching as art and respect for diversity in the application of theory to classroom practice. "Hurst, B., C. Wilson, & Cramer, G. (1998). Professional teaching portfolios. Phi Delta Kappan, 79 (8), 578-82. EJ 563 868" If schools are for change, the better, they must become places whereTeachers can be reflective in the heart of teaching: A Guide to Reflective Practice (McEntee, et al, 2003 ..)

"To learn to grow for a teacher, and Excel, they have to stop periodically and check for yourself, your educational goals and teaching methods. You have to themselves and their students' questions and struggle with them to ask for answers. Inquiry & Reflective to change practice instrumental tools for teachers to improve and refine their philosophy and teaching methods. Evenserves as a teaching method based on students' interests, curiosity and the idea that students better if they learn capitalized construct their own knowledge. "Gemma Clasing, MAPacific Lutheran University (PLU) Masters of Education program." Being reflective is an important aspect of professional development. Because there are to be effective this reflective process cyclically. There is a wealth of documents related to the notion that reflective practice is key not only to professional development, but also on raising standards. Even a cursory search of the DfES Standards

Web page "to be included 500 references to recent policy decisions and initiatives of the Government to confirm back, not only the value of reflective practice, but also the need for both students and teachers in reflective practiceProcess.

Assessment is for Learning programs throughout the country, at some point recognize the importance of reflection and review.

It is impossible to separate AFL reflection of how the capacity for reflection is very much influence key areas such as self-and peer-assessment. But the reflective practice is not limited to AFL All components of school life can be improved by RP - from the teaching support staff for the management team and the governing body. Each RP participating in the process can work this process, the terms of the order to determine the morale and attitudes, attention to detail and focus using introspection as a means of improving self-presentation.

What is Self Help?

George Carlin on themselves to help themselves:
"I went to the bookstore and asked the saleswoman," Where's the self-help section? "She said if she told me it would defeat the purpose."

This type of reality shock can find a turning point when you know that you have left on you.

The turning point comes for most of us when we realize we can improve our lot in life. The moment we accept that we are not steered by external events, but we are dominated by their ownThoughts and actions.

It is at this point in time that those of us in turn help most, a form of self-regulation.

Webster defines self-help groups such as the act or process of correcting or overcoming, its problems without help from others. Change those self.

The Four Types of Self Help.

Self-help can be identified as one of four types:

1st The AHA or epiphany moment - when a person has a dramatic moment of absolute clarity and direction.turns your life is never the same. Like the moment when an alcoholic hits bottom. It is the moment when the realization of your consciousness effects, and you know that has to change the life, and only you can change it. There can be a moment when the solution to a problem, you have to fight with, is crystal clear. You know without doubt how to deal with it.

2nd One to one help is if you can no longer feel alone with the situation, you can not keep everything inside. You can search for counseling with a psychologist, therapist and spiritual guide. Maybe you just have to speak to a confidant, like your best friend.

3rd Group interaction. Groups emphasize face to face interaction. The act or state of a solution of the problems that developed from joining or forming a group to help the suffering of a specific problem, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or other twelve step programs. There are many programs with the help of the community, churches, social groups or groups such as paidhow to lose weight and so on. Support groups are voluntary. They are for the mutual assistance and the establishment of a special purpose. It is a group of peers come together for joint mutual support.

4th Individuals can help yourself, your self be achieved by reading and re-education. You gain clarity in a problem or situation and overcome it through you. Otherwise know asSelf improvement, help refers to the actions of an individual to improve themselves with them or without help from anyone else.

It is the act of providing assistance for themselves without help from others.

Individual self-change done by stresses, such as dealing withpersonal or emotional problems without professional help.

I have personally participated in all four species. They are all beneficial.

I still attend the meetings always result in individual and group discussions and write self-help Ebooks. Limit yourself to say no.

Self-help is the provision of information to solve their own problems. Those of a psychological nature, without the direct supervision of professionals or experts. Independent candidate was readingGroups related to your problem.

Read a book, article, or a distance learning course that offers information or advice books are intended to personally useful or profitable IE: self-help.

The best way to create change and start to improve themselves.

Albert Einstein said:
"Nothing happens until something moves."

The healthy spirit of self serves to increase despair of people.

There they progress in intelligence,Virtue and spiritual growth.

Four measures should you take before you get on the path to self:

1st Forgive yourself
2nd Forgive others
3rd Take
4th Accepting others

Samuel Smiles:
"The spirit of the individual self is the root of all genuine growth in the."
